REVIEW : Overtures / Artifacts (2016)

Overtures is an Italian melodic metal band that was born in 2003. The first full-length album, “Beyond The Waterfall”, was released in 2007. Overtures started a set of promotional shows both in Italy and Europe, playing in different Italian cities and in Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovenia and other European countries.

In 2010, the band, with a new line-up, signed a contract with the Greek record label Sleaszy records and released its second record with the title "Rebirth". “Rebirth” was mastered by “Mika Jussila” (Children of Bodom, Nightwish, HIM, Lordi, Edguy & Altri) at “Finnvox Studios” in Helsinki, and the artwork was created by “Filippo Bignolin. 2013 was the year that Overtures released a brand new opus, “Entering The Maze”, and achieved to gain some really positive review from both fans and press. Nowadays, Overtures is releasing "Artifacts" and they are ready to conquer the melodic heavy world with their tight music, the great melodies, the great arrangements, the amazing technique and the bombastic harmonies!!

"Repentance" which kicks-off the new album is a heavy, in-your-face, melodic metal monster that grabs you with its brilliant epic melody, the heavy riffs and Michele Guaitoli's powerful and heart-ful vocals!! Next, "Artifacts", is really impressive; more technical guitar parts, some progressive pinches, a 'darker' melody and a nice chorus line are the ingredients of this superb tune. "As Candles We Burn" is a more straight forward tune with a late 80's classic metal vibe in it but with an updated sound that makes it another highlight!! "My Refuge" is killer!!! Heavy and melodic with a huge harmony and a catchy chorus line this track is pure candy in my ears.  "Teardrop", which features some beautiful female vocals, is yet another very interesting moment out of the new album.

The fact is that "Artifacts" is an extremely interesting album all the way. This record is so difficult to be categorized; it includes a classic metal sound in it, strong progressive 'touches', big melodies, great guitar work and a 'modern' metal approach that makes it a must have for each and every single fan of the metal scene in general.
